    Christmas Gift! Homemade Sugar Scrub

December 7, 2015 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

    It's the most wonderful time....IMG_8512

...to realize that you're broke and have a gazillion presents to buy and everyone you know already has everything they need?

No but really.  I love homemade gifts.  Of course it's nice to save money, but really it's that second part up there - the people in my life aren't hard to buy for necessarily, they just have what they need and aren't terribly gimme-gimme around this time of year.

I really love giving food gifts, naturally, but this year felt like something cozier, comforting-er, and smellier.  In a good way.  ...

Gestational Diabetes + Depression During Pregnancy

    September 22, 2015 by Lindsay 3 Comments

OMG yes both in one post.  Aren't you, like, so totally excited?

You want cake is probably what's happening.  Me too.

So, we've talked kind of a lot about the glucose tolerance test that you take around mid-pregnancy to see how your body is handling sugar.  You take a little one first that is a "screener," and then if you fail that one you take a longer more involved test that can be used to actually diagnose gestational diabetes.

I'm writing about GD and these tests/screens at the same time I'm writing about depression because the glucose testing process is SUCH  perfect metaphor for depression in general.  And Lordy knows I love a good metaphor.

    On Snow

February 24, 2015 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

wpid-20150224_093316_1.jpgIt's snowing here!  Very lightly, but we woke up to schools closed and this very lovely dusting all over everything.

    The dogs were ecstatic.

I've said over and over again that I love snow more than most adults should - the whole maybe-missing-work is great and all, but it's just so peaceful.  The silence that happens when people are forced to or choose to stay inside?  The slowing down of everything that naturally occurs?  It's breathtaking.  Like everyone takes a big exhale all at once because for once we CAN'T be as rushed or as scheduled as we force ourselves to be, even if we wanted to.

    Little Connections

February 3, 2015 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

This morning I taught yoga twice, as I do a lot of times.  JandL2

I did not look like the above picture.  That is just a picture of the two of us and my underarm fat that I kind of like.

Jay came to my 6:15am class, and hooooboy is that early.  Once you get up you're all LOOK AT ME I'M CONQUERING THE WORLD, but actually making the move to get your ass up is...a lot, sometimes.  ...

    On Finding Your Dharma

November 17, 2014 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

Today we're talking about dharma!  Purpose!  Life's work!

It's very light for a Monday.

    Or not.

This weekend I spent lots of time in a yoga retreat, and our studio owner is all up in arms these days about figuring out why you're here, and honing in on it with laser focus.  It's actually something I've been thinking about a lot recently relating to my life and the 1,847 balls I generally keep in the air, and so the weekend came at just the most perfect time.  We mostly agree at our studio that we'd all live there together and talk about light and happiness and eat quinoa all day if we could, but we live in the real world and have families and bills and the desire to watch Gossip Girl while drinking boxed wine with our sisters, so we have to take these little moments together when we can, make the most of them, and then use the lessons we learn out in the big scary world.

    Like dharma.

No One Gives a Shit If Your Day is Rough

    October 8, 2014 by Lindsay 2 Comments

I know, I know.  Not, like, the best title ever.

I just wanted to get Google's attention.

Anyway.  The other day I was talking to a person I know who uses Tinder to look at other people in her area.  I'm a little bit jealous because I can't do that anymore to my pesky husband who's all "I really think we shouldn't see other people," and I guess I have to be ok with that?  But friends who are on Tinder are very fun for me.  No risk and all that.  ANYWAY.  This person matched with this other person and he said to her in his very first attempt at contact "this has just been SUCH a Monday."

    Energize + Intensify

September 30, 2014 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

This morning while I was racing to teach yoga through three elementary schools worth of traffic I got pulled over for running a red light which was really yellow and also 4 other people did it too and they didn't get tickets and it really wasn't fair but there's nothing I can do about it.  IMG_2683

But I got a ticket, and then was late to work, and then spent the remaining class time I had talking about injecting a little more energy into each of our postures in an effort to be a LITTLE more present while we practiced.

It's hard to turn off our minds.  It's REALLY hard sometimes when you run into a class and throw your mat down and have to offer some kind of physical and spiritual guidance when seven effing minutes ago you were listening to an officer of the law (who happened to be about 22 years old) tell you that you really shouldn't run red lights when there are cops behind you.  ...

Try Not to be a Bitch When You Enter a Yoga Studio

    September 22, 2014 by Lindsay 2 Comments

Last night I was sitting at the front desk in my yoga studio checking people in before the evening class.  I was kind of sleepy like this picture of my dogs sleeping.

A woman who I didn't know came up and signed her name, then asked if the could PLEASE OH PLEASE borrow a yoga towel for free because she'd forgotten hers and had no money and PLEASE OH PLEASE.

    The 9/11 Checklist

    September 11, 2014 by Lindsay 2 Comments

This morning my friend Deborah taught a lovely yoga class all about celebration and gratitude and it was just wonderful.  My body was super tired because I'd already taught yoga once before I took her class, but it was just NICE to be reminded of how lucky we are, and of course on a day like today we can't help but remember that some aren't quite as lucky as us.

Running and Walking and Knees and Weight Loss

    July 23, 2014 by Lindsay 5 Comments

So, we've been doing some fitnessy things.

And then I hurt my knee.

That's kind of the entire story, but I've been thinking a lot about the things we've been working on, tools we've used, and some pretty messed up things about our culture.  As per the usual?

    Namaste {marriage}

    June 2, 2014 by Lindsay 1 Comment

    Welcome, Monday!

I need to tell you something about myself.  This is a real thing.  When I lived alone I kept a can of wasp spray by my bed.  I really dislike wasps, but that wasn't the thing.  I don't think we should have guns (yes, even you, sorry), and I think that if someone ever got close enough to me in the middle of the night to stab I might not do a very good job of protecting myself.  BUT BUT BUT, I read somewhere in an article that taught women to fear the very earth they live on that wasp spray is an excellent protection device.  It sprays for 20 feet and suffocates whatever it hits so....win win, right?

I never had to use it, that's not what this story is about.

    Pregnancy and Love

    May 15, 2014 by Lindsay 5 Comments

I teach yoga a lot, I'm not sure if I've mentioned that before.

    Syke.

Yesterday I was teaching a weird class and I got all preachy about love being simple.  I have to do that sometimes when classes are...bad.  They were just being bad, like all types of classes can be.  Chatty, people running in and out, had to ask multiple times for quiet to start the class, you know the stuff.  THEN, there was a new person who put her mat right in front and huffed and puffed really demonstratively the entire class.  Also loudly said she couldn't breathe several times, which I later found was just because she recently quit smoking and it was "way too hot" in there.

    It was 72 degrees.

    Morningtime

April 29, 2014 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

Ok, I realize that it's afternoon time right now.

I also realize that I was supposed to tell you all about NYC today, and I WAS GOING TO I SWEAR but then I was up all night because I suck at sleeping and then I taught this kind of weirdly awesome restorative yoga class this morning, so I wanted to tell you about that instead and also about morningtime.

NYC tomorrow, I promise.  If you are just SO EXCITED to hear about our trip (I know, you have nothing better to be excited about?), feel free to see all the fun things we did on Instagram.  There was a lot.

    In Service To The World {good friday}

April 18, 2014 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

Are you going to church tonight?  It's Good Friday, you know.

    I'm not, I'm teaching yoga.  That's OK.

Religion can be a tricky thing, a hot button issue, blah blah blah.  The thing is, no matter what you believe, stories from ALL religions can be used to illustrate certain truths that might make the world a better place.  ...

    My Mental Health Issue

April 10, 2014 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

Someone else stabbed some people in a school and now their community will be in a shambles forever and ever and the stabber (?)'s life is basically over and the victim's lives are forever altered.

The news coverage is of course awful, and we will watch and judge and analyze and talk about his family and how he might have been a bad kid and THOSE POOR VICTIMS and it will go on and on for several days and then just kind of...stop.

    As these things do.

    Leaning and Falling

April 2, 2014 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

We'll get back to our weekly dinner (protein is our last step!) later this week, but for today let's talk about happy sunshiny things, mmkay?

This morning I taught yoga like I do every Wednesday morning, and I talked about letting things go that no longer serve us - physical ailments that we strive to alleviate through yoga, duh, but also non-physical things that add nothing to our lives.

    The Shock of Kindness

March 25, 2014 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

First things first:  This is a picture Jay took of me last week with his phone when he got home from San Diego at 11pm and we went to have a super late dinner and I got kind of drunk on two beers because I was so tired so we took selfies on the couch at 1am to contribute to the non-drunk tiredness?

    Tuesday information, you know.

The other thing.  This morning I was teaching yoga, as I do on Tuesdays, and a woman came in late.

    The Scars

    February 19, 2014 by Lindsay 2 Comments

This weekend at my show I was screamed at by a stranger.

I know!  It was totes fun.  Her kid's group had some mic issues during their set, and she demanded that I let them repeat their turn.  In a competition.  With 9 other groups.

Because she had taken a long flight to see the show.

It was baffling, really.  I would really like to see an olympics athlete ask to go again because their conditions for competition were less than ideal.

Then, when I said that it wasn't a possibility but the judges were trained to overlook sound problems, she got super upset.  At me, for not being willing (able) to change the rules for her.  Not a shred of understanding, and started berating me for "doing my job wrong," then slammed a door in my hand as she said "you'd change your mind if you were a mother!"

    Yogi Gift Guide 2013

December 16, 2013 by Lindsay Leave a Comment

This morning we talked about homemade gifts, which are just so wonderful and heartfelt and REALLY the best. But, some of us aren't crafty and also have money to spend on loved ones, which is great too!

You know that one of our great loves is yoga.  Interestingly, the 7,000 year old practice performed outside on the ground in India is SO EFFING EXPENSIVE to do in the US - have you experienced it?  Seriously so expensive.  The thing is, some of the expense is really worth it.  Here's our yogi survival guide - what to spend money on, and some good deals along the way!
