What One Can Learn on Kauai

Last Updated: May 2021 Published: Jan 10, 2014 by Lindsay This post may contain affiliate links to products I use and enjoy. Leave a Comment

Since it's Friday and rainy and cold, let's keep talking about warm sunshiny places, ok?

Please?

We had such an incredible time, and if you need a tropical vacay without the crazy touristy vibe (it was great!  we never left the hyatt!), Kauai is definitely the island for you.  We still can't stop talking about it.

Of course, all travel comes with a learning curve - especially for folks like us who basically got on a plane with zero research about our destination because we figured....google?  Here's what we now know:

  • Sh*t's expensive.  Like $460/gallon of gas, $14/plate of cheap BBQ style, and not in a  touristy way, either.  My logic is this:  It's further than LA, so it's more expensive than LA.  Works, right?  Even cheap food is expensive, so prepare yourself.
  • Water's dangerous.  Like, really dangerous.  Several of the beaches we visited had signs with tallies of visitors who had been swept to sea and other terrifying indicators.  On day, in a fit of genius, the men in our group decided to walk on some rocks about 8 feet high that had waves crashing over them.  A local beach goer RAN over to them screaming and then informed us that he'd seen many people die on that beach.  Unfortunately, he was slurring and calling the men idiots, but they still managed to pull themselves away from the temptation to defy a stranger who wanted them to live.  Upon further research (google!), that particular beach was a known spot for arrogant tourists to lose their lives.  AWESOME.
  • Roosters are a thing.  Caught you off guard, didn't I?  Oh sure, beaches are dangerous and food is expensive.  BIG WHOOP.  Did you think that when you went to Kauai you'd be greeted every morning at 3:30am by really loud roosters?  Me either.  Roosters and chickens are EVERYWHERE, and super talkative.  We witnessed a few fights, and of course got a huge kick out of playing different voices for the birds involved in the fights.  Of course.
  • The Weather Channel is wrong.  Of course you know this, right?  It was worse in Hawaii.  Way worse.  Every day there was a 60% chance of rain, and every day it was sunny all or most of the day.  We had one little shower once, and it was raining when we arrived, but other than that we had gorgeous weather.  Our conclusion is that it doesn't really matter and the weather folk of the island would rather be wrong in a good way (surprise, it's sunny instead!), so they just say it'll probably rain.
  • It's not hot.  On Kauai in January at least.  The house we stayed in had no AC or heat, and it was NO BIG DEAL.  The breeze keeps things cool, and the temperature low's are 55-65 each night with highs of 75-85F each day.  PERFECT.  I guess we can justify spending $14 on BBQ if we don't have an AC bill?  I LIKE IT.

I've got some more stories coming up about specific things we did, but we agree without a doubt that this was one of our favorite vacations EVER.  We haven't taken a ton together since we mostly travel for work, but DAY-UM this was a lovely place with lovely people and way too much to do.

Can someone take up a collection for us to go back?  Thanks.

Grab some #funnylovehawaii if you'd like to see more pictures from our friends, on Instagram especially.  They're talented folk.

Happy weekend!  Let's do something fun.
