It was brought to my attention yesterday that next week is spring break for Clemson University, where I'M A STUDENT.
I have a lot going on. Sheesh.
Spring break doesn't mean a ton to people who work multiple jobs, but it does mean that one night next week that I would be in class I'll be cooking dinner for 2 classmates while we work on a project. SO BREAK-Y! We're one step away from Girls Gone Wild, my classmates and I.
Anyway, I know that real humans probably have real plans for any upcoming breaks. So, in honor of those of you who might be seeing some sunshine in the coming weeks, I've GOT to tell you about this restaurant - Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island, SC. My 3 bff's and I went last year for a weekend away, which was essentially the best part of my year. Minus buying a house and getting engaged kind of and getting a new job and having my first set of counseling clients.
It was tied with those things, is what I mean. 2012 was a good year.
But this place. The entire point of our girls' weekend was to do nothing but cook/eat/drink/sleep. We did VERY well at making our point. We ate at restaurants, made these fish tacos for my friend Addie's birthday (they're her favorite, she orders them everywhere we go), watched crappy girl TV, and slept for MANY hours.
This place is cool as sh*t. Jay had been there before on a guys' weekend, and others of us had wanted to try it. All Jay could tell me over and over was about the Roasted Garlic Blue Cheese topping that is involved in LOTS of the burgers.
Atmosphere-wise, this is a GREAT beach bar. Super rustic with great outdoor seating without 1. being grody and dirty or 2. trying too hard. The drinks weren't terribly cheap, but there were some specials that were yummy and totally affordable. We had a few servers help us throughout the meal, and they were all helpful and efficient. They had to be - there was a LONG wait for tables! We luckily arrived just before the lunch rush.
One section of the appetizer menu is comprised of tortilla chips and various things that can be ordered with them. We ordered queso, because nothing says "I'm trying to look great in a bikini" than melted cheese, right? Right. Go with it. The queso was lovely and gooey and the chips were warm. We were happy.
The food is where. its. at. I can't get over the memory of it. I mean, to be fair, it's burgers/chicken sandwiches/tacos - standard beach bar fare. But all of it is GOOD, and there are a few add-ons that you find through out the menu (bacon blue cheese slaw, folks) that make it really special.
Jay was right - the roasted garlic blue cheese was wonderful. The Sleeper burger comes topped with it AND buffalo shrimp, which was delicious and GORGEOUS.
Any of the sandwiches have an option of burger or grilled chicken, which I thought was a great way to double a menu without taking up any space. There were TONS of sandwiches that we wanted to try, and naturally we spent FOREVER deciding what to order. One of my friends ordered the "regular" cheeseburger with the blue cheese deliciousness, and added grilled onions to hers - another great choice.
To add insult to serious injury for all the other beachy places in the area, Poe's is good at salads too. Like....fresh, moderately healthy salads, not just fried chicken on top of iceberg doused in ranch. The grilled chicken salad had, like, real vegetables on it, a homemade dressing, avocado, and super yummy seasoning on the chicken. ALSO. It came with a pimiento cheese crouton so...yeah....making that at home ASAP.
I could go on and on about Poe's but you now know what you need to know. The atmosphere is fun, the food is delicious, and the service is lovely. One suggestion - don't go at a meal time. They were super busy when we were there, so if you're not into waiting, small spaces, and loud vacationers you'll definitely want to go before or after standard eating times. Click here for the whole menu so you can start planning your next visit there!
