Happy Birthday Jay!

Last Updated: Nov 2018 by Lindsay This post may contain affiliate links to products I use and enjoy. Leave a Comment

Today is Jay's birthday, and to celebrate he slept through the night in our bed all by himself, lucky duck, and then left for a work trip this morning. He also forgot it was his birthday until I said something to him.

Pros and cons to that one, tbh. Two nights in a hotel room alone sounds AMAZING. Two days of PowerPoints and projections...yawn. Hopefully the food will be good.

Jay's birthday always gets combined with Thanksgiving, which as he's gotten older (and he's SUPER OLD, way older than me) has become a wonderful thing because it usually means that he gets to see his sisters and nephew and nieces in some combination. This year his niece and nephew took it upon themselves to make his cake for him, which was so sweet and special - it turned out delicious, too!

Birthdays are strange as we get older, right? Not as celebratory, particularly not in the little kid years, and a vague reminder that time is ticking and stay healthier, bodies age, don't mess this up, but then also LET'S CELEBRATE.

I'll do the celebrating, Jay can deal with his own bod aging.

Jay has done the damn thing this year. He did great in his second year at his job, and got a big promotion a few months ago when his awesome boss moved on to bigger and better things. This was unexpected, and he felt flattered to be offered the new job but nervous since he hadn't been in his current job for too long. He knew it was in his best interest to take the job, but the learning curve has been steep, the time required for all of the work and learning has been a ton, and his wife varies in support levels for working until midnight (sorry). By all accounts his new boss is pleased and the people that now work for him love him as a boss, which isn't surprising at all.

And then I had a baby in the middle of all that, fun times all around. And it has been fun, of course, but having a newborn in the midst of professional nuttiness isn't the most relaxing thing in the entire world, and Jay has pretty much just eliminated more and more sleep until he feels like he's doing enough with work and enough with us.

This is exactly how Jay is in his entire life. Do lots of things cheerfully to keep as many people as possible happy. I try to pick up his fun-time slack by reminding him to hang out with his friends, go places without us, and generally rest, already. It's not a big thing to contribute, but I try.

Happy Birthday, Jay! I love you so much. Eat a fancy piece of fish tonight (not steak because it'll kill you, you know), and enjoy the hotel. We'll be here waiting to suck the life out of you when you get home on Wednesday. #christmasdecorations will do that to a family unit, after all.

xxoo
