Five for Friday

  1. Beck had her first dance recital last weekend, and it was one of the highlights of my life as a parent so far. The best part was, naturally, the performance, which we watched backstage like the dance parents we are. The choreography was simple yet totally unattainable by the twos and threes. HOWEVER, in the midst of her classmates freezing completely on stage, Beck turned around and caught her shadow on the back wall, then proceeded to completely boogie facing the wall until she turned around and did a few poses right at the end of the number. It was the most pure, joyous, innocent dancing I've ever seen.
  2. AND THEN OF COURSE. The battle to wear the dance costume every day has happened. Most days I let her, because why not? This morning she insisted on taking it to my parents' house with the agreement that she would wear a regular dress in the car and to the park so that she doesn't rip the costume. I told her to put it by the door, and as she walked away I heard her muttering (this is totally true), "that's right, I'll pack it up, because it is my choice to take my costume today. My body, my choice." Um. Not what we meant by that, but ok.
  3. I posted some favorites for Memorial Day yesterday, did you see? I'm also going to make some spicy pork noodles with a super duper umami sauce that I saw on a Bon Apetit video and cannot WAIT for those. Savory sauce comin' atcha in a few weeks!
  4. The constant coverage of the 2020 election is already equal parts exhausting, exciting like a sport, and sad/scary because it's not a sport, it's our life. Then there's also the pessimistic side of me that knows statistically most presidents are elected to second terms and I believe in math and science, including but not limited to climate change being real.
  5. Happy Memorial Day! We are having a very intentional weekend at home with just the four of us, no outings or visitors or plans. We're going to cook, watch movies, organize some things for the move that will never happen, and play in the yard. I'm SO exited. Have a perfect weekend! Tell me what you're going to eat.
