On Saturday two of my best friends threw me a baby shower (it feels selfish to say that like...they threw the baby a shower and I'm just her representative) and it was lovely and wonderful and I'm going to tell you all about it. The party was in our neighborhood, so before we headed over my sisters and mom came over to take some pictures because 1. we didn't at the beach this year, 2. we were all showered and looked pretty good and 3. we won't all be together at Thanksgiving, which is when we usually have this ritual of kind of fighting about pictures but then being really happy we took some.
It's always kind of a process.
WELL THIS TIME we started pictures 9 minutes before the shower was supposed to start, so we had Jay snap a few and I think our hurry to get to the party made him hurry and basically he took a bunch of pictures while moving. Of maybe 60 shots we got less than 10 actually in focus, which is kind of great. The pictures FEEL like the moment, and they aren't the best or most sophisticated, but there's laughter and REAL smiles coming from eyes and not just fake bared teeth when someone says smile.
Those are the best kinds of smiles.
We always do a few of smaller groups of sisters, couples, etc, and this was the best picture of me and Jay. That implies that the rest were worse. So we had some pros show us how to take real pregnancy pictures.
My family is ridiculous and fun and loud and stressful and what I love about them is that since we don't have kids (yet) we're still kind of in this great sibling place where we're pretty up on each other's lives and we get to spend most holidays together and we all just show up when things go down, you know? It's wonderful. I think that having kids later in life AND still all living within 90 miles of each other contributes to the fact that we've gotten to spend a good amount of time together as adults rather than growing up, leaving the house, and immediately creating new nuclear families. That's happening too, slowly, but this time just may have bonded us in a way that is different than simply growing up together - kids are kind of dicks to each other sometimes, and we were no exception.
Also I love that striped dress so much but it does absolutely nothing for any semblance of a figure I have left. I look like a WHALE but also I don't care because I had such a fun day and was also comfortable.
