Dear Beck,
Want to Read Later?
You are having a moment right now. I'm thinking it's teeth?
One thing you'll learn when you get older; when an older baby gets fussy people have precious little to offer besides "is she teething?" This may be correct with you because you have 6 teeth to other kids' 10 or so, but I still think it's funny that we don't allow toddlers to get in bad moods ever, at all.
You are allowed to be in bad moods, but sometimes I have zero clue how to handle them.
For example: the other night. A Sunday night! You, me, and Daddy had spent the whole day together. We ate tacos, went on a walk, played with so.many.toys, all of our favorite weekend things. You were relatively weird about eating at lunch, and kept demanding applesauce, hence our idea about new teeth coming in. At DINNER, however, you lost your ever loving mind. Pain? Maybe. I offered you all of your favorite foods, and you screamed and screamed and screamed. Finally I suggested a bath then trying food again, which you agreed to.
You took a normal bath. You asked without being prompted for peas and corn. When I stuck you back in your high chair you screamed again like the seat was eating your toes off. I gave up on food and sat with you on the couch for 30 minutes while you full-on wailed. I still have zero clue what was wrong, so I just sat there and held you gently. It was comical, you would come over to me, then wiggle away, then come back, howling the whole time. I felt so bad for you but didn't mind being there with you.
Finally you calmed down enough to listen to words, and we made a plan to go outside. You love looking at our garden, like in these pictures.
You grabbed a tomato off the plant and ate it, then asked for more tomatoes. We had some inside so I took you to the kitchen where you sat on the counter while I cut up a tomato AROUND YOU so you could be in my arms and not fall off while I cut the tomato into little bits. It was quite the process, and your father watched golf the entire time it was happening. He probably would have been impressed if he'd seen what was going on.
You ate a ton of tomato, and lost your mind AGAIN when I told you the tomatoes were done. I suggested books. We read books. I suggested toys. We played with each toy for about 10 seconds before you cried again.
I decided to attempt bedtime, and you went to bed 30 minutes early and slept for 12 hours. Crying that hard must have worn you out. You did the exact same thing yesterday, all day, including the early bedtime, only with an added exciting fever. It didn't seem to bother you because it meant we got to "put medicine on" at intervals, which I think you say because you sit on the changing table where we put clothes on to give you medicine. I think?
Other than your very normal mood swings, you are my favorite person in the world. Current obsessions of yours are reading, snuggling with Baby, spelling your name, and playing with refrigerator letter magnets. You know the letter K, and that's about it, but just in the last few days you started saying "b for beck!" so exuberantly that I almost think you know what it means. You notice everything, repeat most of what we say, and when we ride in the car I always hear you practicing new words and phrases you've picked up. You are SO smart, and I'm thinking you will use that to either ruin my spirit or run the world. Probably both.
My new obsession is taking pictures of the top of your head, especially when you let me put in pigtails. I try very hard not to discuss your looks much because they truly don't matter, but the hair-dos that we get you in are sometimes too much for me to bear.
You have also started biting your own finger while you eat and saying "finger hurt!" then I kiss it and you say "allllll better." If only it were always that easy.
Thanks for letting me take your picture, you sweet labile little weirdo.
Love,
Mama
